About EXCELsIOR
EXCELlent Science with Impact, Open and Reliable
The aim of EXCELScIOR project is to develop and extend the research potential of the University of Coimbra, through the implementation of a new interdisciplinary research group dedicated to Meta-Research. For this, the project will create and retain an excellent group in Meta-Research. Under the guidance of Professor John Ioannidis (ERA Chair holder) from Stanford University – USA, the recruited group will have an active role in:

1) Restructuring the research organization and management of Biomedical Research at the University of Coimbra;
2) Designing and coordinating an International Doctoral programme in Meta-Research, Research Methods and Practices;
3) Laying the foundation to create a new research to action center at UC ‒ METRIC C ‒ devoted to improving scientific quality and impact across all domains.
EXCELScIOR will leverage UC’s scientific excellence and innovation potential, beginning with Biomedical Sciences, via a Meta-Research-based managerial innovation approach intended to improve the Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB)’s organizational performance and competitiveness in R&I.

Prof. John Ioannidis, the ERA Chair holder
Professor John Ioannidis, University of Stanford – USA, is the named ERA Chair holder of this project. Considered a pioneer in meta-research, Prof. Ioannidis is one of the ten most-cited scientists globally across all sciences. His work in this field attained worldwide recognition and has transformed research in biomedicine and multiple other scientific areas. This project will thrive under the leadership of Prof. Ioannidis and, in the long term, will evolve into a new research to action center: the Meta-Research Innovation Center – Coimbra (METRIC C).
