University of Coimbra

The University of Coimbra is among the major science and technology hubs for fundamental and applied research in Portugal.

It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, given its architecture, unique culture and traditions, and historical role.

The Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN, a business incubator and technology transfer center of the university) and the nearby Biocant Biotechnology Park support innovation, and work together with the applied research communities.

Notable startup companies born from the University of Coimbra include Critical SoftwareCrioestaminalCiberbit and Feedzai.

The university’s R&D centers count more than 2350 PhD-holding researchers, of which about 350 hosted by CIBB – Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology, which brings together in a single hub of excellence and international reference in the domains of Biomedicine and Biotechnology, the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology and the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research.

CIBB has the mission of deciphering fundamental biological processes with relevance towards understanding health and disease mechanisms, and to use this knowledge to propose novel therapeutic strategies. CIBB brings together over 600 multinational researchers and support staff, the largest critical mass of internationally experienced researchers in the Centre Region and one of the largest in Portugal, linked to the Faculties of Pharmacy, Medicine, Sciences and Technology, and Economics, to the Institute of Interdisciplinary Research and Coimbra University Hospital.
