Meta-Science Summer School empowers early career researchers to improve research practices

From 15 to 20 June 2025, early career researchers from diverse disciplines gathered near Frankfurt, Germany, for an intensive and collaborative Meta-Science Summer School. Co-organized by leading institutions including the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH), the German Reproducibility Network (GRN), the META REP Priority Program, iRise, and the EXCELScIOR project at the University of Coimbra, the course offered a unique opportunity to explore the science of science.

Designed and co-led by meta-research expert and EXCELScIOR Team Leader Tracey Weissgerber, the program focused on designing and conducting studies to improve research reproducibility, transparency, and integrity. Over the course of the week, participants worked in small interdisciplinary teams to conceptualize and begin data collection for original meta-research projects.

The summer school provided not only theoretical grounding but also hands-on experience in planning real-world studies. Several groups expressed interest in continuing their work beyond the course, with the aim of publishing their findings in collaboration with their instructors.

This initiative reflects the growing international commitment to reforming research practices and empowering the next generation of scholars to lead this transformation.
