EXCELScIOR PI Alfredo Sánchez-Tójar leads 4-day workshop on Open Science, Systematic Reviews, and Meta-Analysis

From October 21–24, 2025, Seville (Spain) hosted a 4-day workshop on Open Science, Systematic Reviews, and Meta-Analysis, co-led by EXCELScIOR PI Alfredo Sánchez-Tójar and and Ignasi Bartomeous from Doñana Biological Station – CSIC. The workshop was organised by the Spanish Ecological Association of Terrestrial Ecology (AEET), in collaboration with the Society for Open, Reliable, and Transparent Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (SORTEE) and the Doñana Biological Station.

The workshop provided a practical introduction to modern methods of evidence synthesis in ecology and evolutionary biology, focusing on systematic review and meta-analysis. The Alfredo Sánchez led sessions covered systematic review, effect sizes, meta-analysis in R, and publication bias, giving participants the tools to apply these methods in their own research.

Thirteen researchers attended, representing different career stages, from PhD students to researchers with 10 years post-PhD experience. The course offered hands-on learning, encouraged discussion, and strengthened participants’ skills in open and reproducible research practices.

The event was an opportunity to foster collaboration, promote open science principles, and support the development of robust and transparent research in ecology and evolutionary biology.
