New preprint from EXCELScIOR team presents ten simple rules for reusable research protocols

A new preprint from the EXCELScIOR team, led by Tracey Weissgerber and co-authored by Paulo Oliveira, Priya Silverstein, Thomas Feliciani, Alfredo Sánchez-Tójar, and several external collaborators, presents practical guidance on improving the way research methods are documented and shared.

Research methods are among the most valuable outputs generated by researchers, yet publications often lack sufficient detail to allow others to reproduce or reuse them. This preprint highlights how sharing clear, reusable step-by-step protocols can address this challenge and significantly improve the transparency and efficiency of research practices.

The authors present ten simple rules to guide researchers in creating protocols that are easy to follow, adapt, and maintain over time. These rules cover key stages of the process, from preparing and structuring a protocol, to testing, refining, and sharing it through appropriate platforms.

Reusable step-by-step protocols can help standardise procedures within and across research groups, facilitate training of new researchers, and support the long-term accessibility of methods. By making protocols more transparent and accessible, researchers can enhance reproducibility and foster collaboration across disciplines.

This work aligns with the broader goals of the EXCELScIOR project to promote more transparent, efficient, and reusable research practices.
