From 2 to 5 July 2026, the EXCELScIOR team took part in the Coimbra Gym Fest – FIG Trampoline World Cup, engaging with gymnasts, families, and spectators through a series of outreach activities designed to introduce the public to the field of Meta-Research.
Hosted alongside a world-class sporting event, the EXCELScIOR stand provided opportunities for visitors of different ages to explore concepts related to research practices in an engaging and accessible way. Activities included the Research Practices Jenga, where participants discussed examples of good and questionable research practices through parallels with everyday-life situations, and a colouring activity for younger visitors focused on identifying examples of good research practices.
Participants were also invited to take part in a smiley-face challenge, where they had to provide instructions for someone else to draw a smiley correctly. The activity highlighted the importance of giving clear and complete instructions, drawing a parallel with the need for detailed research protocols.
Over the course of the event, 21 participants (4 adults and 17 children) took part in the activities and provided feedback. Overall, participants reported a very positive experience, with the majority indicating that they were satisfied or very satisfied with the activities.
The event offered a valuable opportunity to bring discussions about research practices beyond academic settings and engage with the wider community in an informal and interactive environment. Through these activities, EXCELScIOR continues its commitment to promoting awareness of research quality, integrity, and transparency among diverse audiences.
