EXCELScIOR members contribute to seminar on research metrics, integrity and excellence

EXCELScIOR team members participated in a seminar aimed at promoting critical thinking around research metrics, integrity, and excellence. The event was organised within the framework of the INNOV2CARE project, led by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra.

During the seminar, EXCELScIOR researcher Inês Almeida addressed key issues related to research(er) assessment and incentive structures, with a particular focus on early‑career researchers. Her contribution highlighted the importance of valuing research rigor, transparency, and a broader range of scientific activities and outputs beyond traditional publication metrics. She also emphasised current initiatives that seek to improve research practices and foster more responsible research evaluation.

EXCELScIOR coordinator Paulo Oliveira contributed to the discussion by examining what constitutes excellence in research. His presentation explored the role of different stakeholders within the research ecosystem – including publishers, funders, and institutions – in shaping researcher behaviour and promoting the adoption of good research practices. He stressed the shared responsibility of these actors in creating conditions that support high‑quality, ethical research.

The seminar discussions underscored that challenges related to research evaluation are not rooted in the metrics themselves, but rather in their misuse and limitations when assessing research quality and impact. Participants highlighted the need to strike a balance between quantitative and qualitative indicators, while advocating for healthier research environments that safeguard researchers’ well‑being and help mitigate publication pressures.

A key takeaway from the event was the importance of strengthening capacity in critical thinking and good research practices, as well as recognising and rewarding researchers who uphold high standards of integrity. These efforts are essential for fostering a more transparent, inclusive, and sustainable research culture.

The EXCELScIOR project is pleased to have contributed to this important discussion and remains committed to advancing responsible research practices and research assessment reform.
